The Golden Delicious apple: The Golden Delicious apple originated in Clay County, West Virginia, from a tree planted in 1775.
The state was originally proposed to be called the State of Kanawha, named after a Native American tribe and a major river.

In 1967, the Silver Bridge, which connected West Virginia to Ohio, collapsed during rush hour, killing 46 people.

West Virginia is the only state that's entirely within the Appalachian Mountains, and it has the highest average elevation of any state east of the Mississippi River.

West Virginia was one of the five Civil War border states. It separated from Virginia in 1863 after a bitter debate over secession.

The first Mother's Day was celebrated in West Virginia.

The first Rural Free Delivery Program began in West Virginia.

West Virginia is home to the largest cut-stone masonry building.
